About

Jim Kraus is an American painter and sculptor living and working in San Miguel de Allende. Before dedicating himself fully to fine art, he spent more than two decades as a creative director at leading national advertising agencies in Chicago, Los Angeles, St. Louis, and Dallas – an experience that continues to inform his sophisticated sense of composition, color, and visual storytelling.

About

Jim began formally studying painting in 1999 under James Smith at Forest Park College in St. Louis. In 2000, he presented his first solo exhibition at Sister Studios Gallery in the city’s Loft District.

After relocating to San Diego in 2001, Jim joined Kettner Street Studios in Little Italy and continued his studies at The Art Academy of San Diego under Stuart Burton, concentrating on representational landscape painting.

His work evolved further after moving to Dallas in 2004. There, he established a studio in the Bishop Arts District and began exploring the expressive edge of landscape painting through increasingly loose, atmospheric, and nearly abstract compositions inspired by artists such as Wolf Kahn, Richard Diebenkorn, Forrest Moses, and Milton Avery.

Today, Jim’s paintings are vibrant, expressive interpretations of the natural world — layered with organic forms, shifting color relationships, and a sense of emotional atmosphere. Rooted in close observation yet open to abstraction, his work invites viewers to discover their own narratives within each piece and to experience the paintings differently over time.

His reclaimed wood and metal sculptures extend this same philosophy of transformation and discovery but with a subtle cubist edge. Using carefully curated found materials, Jim creates imaginative works that elevate the overlooked and discarded into finely composed sculptural objects. Each piece reflects a refined artistic eye, balancing spontaneity, craftsmanship, and thoughtful design.
